Words and music copyright 2014 Thomas Hauck / Olex Music (ASCAP) There’s no rest for the weary The heavy load I carry Pushes down on me Down down down to the ground The sun comes up the sun goes round I’m counting down my time If I can’t make something good Then life ain’t worth a dime There’s trouble coming every day Walkin’ right beside me Go find someone else I say I’m poor but I’m still free There’s no rest for the weary The heavy load I carry Pushes down on me Down down down to the ground I ain’t one to mope and cry Ain’t nobody’s fault but mine My back is strong so load me up I’ll get along just fine If you want to lend a hand My friend I won’t refuse If you want to pass me by I’m accustomed to bad news Well there’s no rest for the weary The heavy load I carry Pushes down on me Down down down to the ground

F the way it used to be It’s all ancient history Yesterday is gone away It’s nothin but a memory F the way it used to be It’s all ancient history Yesterday is gone away It’s nothin but a memory Mama used to tell me Bout the good old days When everything was perfect In every single way The grass was always green The sky was always blue The sun was always shining On Titanic’s noble crew Say goodbye to yesterday It’s time to turn the page We are living for today Celebrate our golden age F the way it used to be It’s all ancient history Yesterday is gone away It’s nothin but a memory Hippies with their flowers And punks in safety pins Transform into lawyers And bankers drinking gin How can you look forward When you’re looking back You’re lying with your head Across the railroad track Say goodbye to yesterday It’s time to turn the page We are living for today Celebrate our golden age Say goodbye to yesterday It’s / time to turn the page We are living for today Celebrate our golden age F the way it used It’s all ancient history Yesterday is gone away It’s nothin but a memory Listen baby facts are facts Tune into reality We are never going back Back to ancient history It’s the only way Say goodbye to yesterday It’s time to turn the page We are living for today Celebrate our golden age

Plastic Heart Words and lyrics © 2014 Thomas Hauck / Olex Music Everytime I kiss her she just turns her head away Everytime I gotta work she wants to go and play Everytime I want her she pretends she doesn’t see Everytime I leave her she comes runnin back to me I got a girl with a plastic heart She doesn’t love me She just plays the part She could tell me blue was red and never blink an eye Tell me I’m her everything until she says goodbye After midnight when I’m sitting on my lonely bed Double whisky doesn’t ease the aching in my head I got a girl with a plastic heart She doesn’t love me She just plays the part She knows that I will always be around I’ll be here to pick her off the ground She’s my girl to the end of time She’s got a plastic heart and she makes me feel so fine gotta have her gotta hold her To the day I pull the plug on her oh yeah I got a girl with a plastic heart She doesn’t love me She plays the part Can’t say goodbye She’s got my soul We’re locked together We’re inseparable She knows that I will always be around I’ll be here to pick her off the ground She’s my girl to the end of time She’s got a plastic heart and she makes me feel so fine gotta have her gotta hold her Till the day I pull the plug on her I got a girl with a plastic heart She doesn’t love me She just plays the part Can’t say goodbye She’s got my soul We’re locked together We’re inseparable

Poison Tea 03:24
Poison Tea Words and lyrics © 2014 Thomas Hauck / Olex Music Sara came from the land of snow Preaching guns and butter Let’s turn back the clock she said I like the past much better Everything was simple then The rules were plain to see I got mine and you got yours There was no inequality Yeah yeah yeah yeah Lies all lies Are what she says to me I won’t eat her bitter bread Or drink her poison tea Teddy rode a longhorn steer Charging and a buckin’ With a Facebook friend in Jesus And a copy of the Constitution I like men in powdered wigs Says Teddy with a drawl Cause they’re all dead and buried They can’t argue back at all Yeah yeah yeah yeah Lies all lies Are what he says to me I won’t eat his bitter bread Or drink his poison tea Dave and Charlie count their cash They love that legal tender They’ve got hatred in their hearts For the people’s strange new leader He / ain’t like us they whisper loud While giving bags of gold To back room boys who load their guns Against imagined foes Yeah yeah yeah yeah Lies all lies Are what they say to me I won’t eat their bitter bread Or drink their poison tea In the halls of Washington And on Main Street USA They spread their paranoia Like it’s nineteen fifty eight They preach against their enemies Who come from distant shores With loaded guns they’re waiting For the knock upon the door Yeah yeah yeah yeah Lies all lies Are what they say to me I won’t eat their bitter bread Or drink their poison tea

White Widow Spider Words and lyrics © 2014 Thomas Hauck / Olex Music I was in my garden Watching my TV When I changed the channel She was staring down at me Here she comes White widow spider Dropping down Her silken thread Gonna tell White widow spider Go back home Or I’ll smite you dead I was in my living room Playing my Nintendo When I got to level ten She was climbing through my window Here she comes White widow spider Dropping down Her silken thread Gonna tell White widow spider Go back home Or I’ll smite you dead You and I will never be the same We will always play a different game When I see blue sky you see rain When I am happy you feel only pain White Widow Spider I sailed across the ocean A thousand miles or more And when we dropped the anchor She was waiting on the shore You and I will never be the same We will always play a different game When I see blue sky you see rain When I am happy you feel only pain Here she comes White widow spider blazing eyes burn hot and red Gonna tell White widow spider Go back home Or I’ll smite you dead

Work Together Words and lyrics © 2014 Thomas Hauck / Olex Music You think that I don’t care About us being broken I think that you’re unfair C’mon now let’s work together Every day we’re fighting About some little nothing It’s too exasperating C’mon now let’s work together It’s not hard to see when trouble comes our way The door is slamming shut just like a prison cell You tell your friends that I am like a solid rock I think that you are underneath a witch’s spell yeah You got your founding fathers Rolling in their coffins They couldn’t do much better C’mon now let’s work together The map you got is ancient Can’t give us information To get tomorrow’s station C’mon now let’s work together Can’t you see how long a way we both have come Since those days of men and women livin’ in chains I can’t understand tomorrow being such a fright All we gotta do is use our brains Walk with me now Talk to me now Don’t tell me how Let’s try to get along Don’t forget the friends who are depending on us To figure out the way we ought to go No/body can afford to keep on messing up Be/fore you blow your top just take it slow Walk with me now Talk to me now Don’t tell me how Let’s try to get along The clock is tickin baby Don’t do nothing crazy Your argument is hazy C’mon now let’s work together Give me one more chance And listen to my reasons I’m sure you’ll change your stance C’mon now let’s work together

Racing the Sun Words and lyrics © 2014 Thomas Hauck / Olex Music When I was a boy Life seemed so simple then My days could last forever And time was quick to spend The road stretched out before me Across the blue horizon The race⎯I didn’t care If I lost or if I won I’m racing the sun across the empty sky The time growing shorter never asking why Too much left undone and there’s nothing left to prove I’m never standing still I always gotta move Counting my accomplishments Doesn’t take too long Maybe they’re a symphony Or maybe just one song Castles floating in the air Or a single stubborn stone Whatever they may be I’m born and die alone I’m racing the sun across the empty sky The time growing shorter never asking why Too much left undone and there’s nothing left to prove I’m never standing still I always gotta move I ain’t gonna cause a big sensation For me the world has shown no expectation When I stop to think about Where I’m going next I shrug my shoulders take my pen And write another check Another bill is coming due But paying I don’t mind Once there was a day I didn’t have a dime I’m racing the sun across the empty sky The time growing shorter never asking why Too much left undone and there’s nothing left to prove I’m never standing still I always gotta move

about

REVIEW in THE NOISE Music New England
Tom Hauck’s latest is a mostly solid block of superbly accomplished songs which would sound even better with a more skillfully variegated vocal mix. I’d love to hear some cover versions of just about all of these songs, which offer up an amazing amalgamation of diverse garage styles. Opener “Shining Star” has a decided bite, as though ZZ Top were composing an acid garage punk anthem. “Ancient History” is a sneering sing-song punk anthem ala Joan Jett, with superadded wild guitar riffage. “Lonelyhearts” is a new wave anti-love song worthy of the Buzzcocks, what with its pulsing declamatory feel. “Plastic Heart” reminds me of an uncharacteristically uptempo Black Sabbath, while “I Got Up” is reminiscent of classic proto-punk such as “Talk Talk” by the Music Machine. “Poison Tea” reminds me of the Turbines with a decidedly nasty edge and enjoyably skewed lyrics. “Work Together” is a choppy declamatory punctuated by some appealing minimalist guitar licks. “Love Me Tender” is an entertaining Elvis riff whose chief charm is its brevity. “No Rest for the Weary” is another sing-songy new wave rave-up punctuated by a telegraphic guitar riff; “Racing the Sun” reminds me a bit of early XTC with the twee melodicism of Queen and another inimitable guitar line. If anything, the final track encapsulates the remarkable diversity of this admirable collection. A genuine keeper. One of the best collections of the year. (Francis DiMenno)
